“มีอาหารมากมายในนั้น คุณจะต้องมีความสุข (There are a lot of food in there, you’ll be happy)” That was what the guy who took me off the streets told me. “จริงหรือ (Really?)” —and I was just a mere 4 year old naive child who simply wanted a playmate. “ใช่! มีเด็กๆ อยู่ที่นั่นเยอะมากด้วย คุณจะต้องสนุกแน่ๆ เด็กๆ ยังจะสอนเรื่องวินัยและช่วยให้คุณรู้จักตัวตนที่แท้จริงของคุณด้วย (Yes! There are a lot of kids there too so you will surely enjoy. They will also teach you discipline and help you know your true self)” —and so I was sent to a different country.True self? Ridiculous. I was not a monster yet they turned me into one.In the remote corner in one of the provinces of Iowa, hidden behind a facade of a quaint orphanage, lies the existence of an organization that hones orphans to be merciless killers. The organization mastered the art of deception, training children how to kill behind the guise of a respectable orphanage that’s known to offer kids the affection and care they deserve.“Hey, what’s your name?”I didn’t have a name… I guess my biological parents didn’t love me one bit, that they didn’t even bother giving me a name before throwing me out. Or perhaps I was just way too young to remember. But anyway, I grew up alone in the streets. I didn’t even know how I survived. I was so fragile and tiny, yet I did anyway.“I don’t have one,” I responded to the kid’s question. I was so thrilled to finally have friends. I’ve been learning English and a few other languages to communicate since I arrived at the orphanage.“I’ll give you a name then,” he replied. My eyes lit up in excitement. Finally, I will have friends and a name. “Hmm how about Midget? or Dwarf? Oh I like Midget better!” —and they laughed. “Later, Midget!” One said as they walked past me, bumping their shoulder hard unto my fragile one. With that, my candle of hope instantly died down as they kick and hit me daily, calling me “Midget”.It happened everyday. The only thing I was capable of doing was reporting it to the adults, but even the higher ups didn’t give a damn. “Crying won’t do you any good. Fight back. Jesus, what a crybaby!”Then my training started. There were no playmates, no candies, no chocolates as promised. Instead, we were asked to learn and master how to wield weapons or battle against each other without rules. Kick if you want, hit if you want, stab if you want, shoot if you want, or even kill if you want. You’re free to do anything to survive.Countless deaths took place inside the orphanage, yet no one mourned or even gave a damn at all. I kept on crying day and night. Perhaps out of fear? I don’t know. I was a helpless little girl who didn’t want to hurt anyone, but unfortunately the others aren’t the same. They were strong and purely evil, they would kill the weak as told. As for me? I don’t know what’s so special about me that I was able to get through. All I know is that the orphanage wasn’t the paradise they promised. It was hell. They treated us like beasts, ordering us to endure the wrath of the world. And since I was a vulnerable little girl with no name, I had to suffer more than the others. I had to endure the lethal training, as well as that group of four boys picking up on me for being tiny and nameless. Until one day, I felt so done being the weak and the “midget” they took me for.I almost died then. Fighting back almost had me dead; however, I promised myself that if I survive, I won’t let anyone touch me ever again. I was able to keep that promise, although that was also the moment when I lost the sense of humanity in me.“Fucking Midget, let me go!” I was 9 years old when I knocked 3 boys out, leaving 1 boy conscious with his arms tied to a barricade.
“You wanna die, huh? Just you wait!” He threatened in attempts to inflict fear in me.
I was just peacefully recalling our trainer’s lecture, yet he was being all arrogant. I don't get why he’s so full of himself when he’s the one being tied up at that moment. It's irritating the heck out of me.“One of the body’s vitals is lungs… Larynx too for it’s a crucial gateway as it directs air to the lun—”“Shut the fuck up, you fucking Midget! You’re nothing but a weak little girl!” Fear was evident from his voice and it was satisfying. But how dare he have me silenced?“Do you know how long it takes for a man to die?” I mimicked our instructor.
“Don’t come near me!” He fussed.
“Scared already? I’m just asking,” and slowly made my way towards him.
I had nothing but a blunt wooden stick, yet I loved how he was already trembling in fear.So this is what it feels like picking on impotent people, huh?Pathetic.“Around 1 minute if you cut an artery, 30-60 seconds if you cut a vein”
“I’ll kill you…” he replied, shadowing his fear behind false bravery. I looked at him right in the eyes.
He can’t be serious, right? I mean he had his chances, yet I’m still here.I didn’t know what’s gotten into me, but I felt the urge to bury the wooden stick I had in hand deep into his neck regardless of how blunt it was. “Merely 12 seconds if you stab or cut the carotid artery,” and I wanted to see if that was true, thus with the stick in hand, I stabbed it right into his neck with force, allowing his blood to compromise my plain white shirt.I was about to do the same towards the other 3 who were unconscious when someone voiced out from a corner.“Quite the trivia there. You definitely scared him.” I, then, looked over my shoulder to see who it was.“Why did you kill him though? Aren’t you supposed to be getting along?” A fine young woman who seemed to be in her teenage years was what greeted my sight.Who’s she? I’ve never seen her. What’s she doing here? Everyone’s supposed to be greeting the guests outside—oh… She must be a wandering guest.“He’s evil,” I briefly answered.
“And you believe you’re any different?” It was a simple question that escaped the young lady’s lips but it left me pondering up until today.
“Shaniah, why are you here? You’re supposed to be out there—oh…” an unfamiliar male arrived.Neither of them seemed to be surprised with the killings. I assume they know everything about the orphanage and what it really is.Shaniah it is then…“A victim of bullying, I assume?” she chuckled, completely ignoring the man who had just come, “if so, I suggest you leave the weakest one alive. Let him live to tell the tale of how you, who’s nothing but a tiny little girl, killed his comrades with nothing but a wooden stick.”And that’s what I did. I killed 3 boys, leaving 1 alive to tell the tale of how I, who was nothing but a nameless tiny little girl, killed 3 boys with nothing but a wooden stick. I inflicted fear by being the nothing they take me for.“Pft, you do not believe what they said about her, right? I mean look at her, she’s just a little baby who cries for her mom at night.” It was a fine afternoon, I was taking my meal in the cafeteria alone since I wasn’t able to eat lunch on time because of my demerit, but this one arrogant kid with his sidekick’s hindering my peace. “Come on, just let her be…” His friend said.“Calm down, you coward. That’s just a midget!” Uttered the first boy. He was about to pat my head in mockery, but too bad I promised myself I wouldn’t let anyone touch me ever again, thus before he could even land his palm on my hair, I stabbed his neck with a fork already.12 seconds and his whole arrogant life as an orphan flashed through his eyes, leaving his company stunned in front of me. “He should’ve listened to you,” and I released a brittle laugh as he took a step back before completely running away.Leave the weakest one alive to tell the tale.Since then, people continued to address me as “Midget” but it was fine, for reluctance braced everyone in terms of approaching me in exchange. I loved how they left me alone, allowing me to live in peace.I was 12 when Mr. and Mrs. Moreau visited the orphanage. I didn’t know them but I heard they’re the owners of the biggest weaponry in the world, and they’re here to pick worthy children to look over their possession. We were then again asked to battle against each other in front of them. Other kids fought to be chosen, I fought to survive, and I guess no weapon is stronger than one’s will to live.“This kid’s excellent. What’s your name?” Mrs. Moreau asked, but I didn’t know what to answer. I didn't have a name, and I definitely don’t wanna be called ‘Midget’ forever.“Yverest…” an unidentified lass voiced out from the crowd, “her name’s Yverest… Like the Mt. Everest but with the letter Y.” It was Shaniah. She aged like fine wine.Yverest?“Well then, Yverest. Pack your things because you are coming with us all the way to the Philippines and oh, my daughter, Nicolette, would certainly love to meet you. Congratulations!”The mini stadium then burst out in sighs of disappointment as they left one by one. They must’ve questioned why a girl like me’s the one who got chosen alone.“Wait!” I called out to Shaniah. Luckily, she stopped and looked over, “What do you mean Yverest?”“I heard you didn’t have a name so Yverest is your name from now on,” responded Shaniah.
“Why Yverest?”
“You know Mt. Everest right?” I nodded. It’s the highest mountain to ever exist.
“You’re shorter compared to the others, but I believe you’re way bigger than you actually are. I’ve seen your performance out there. You're good looking yet you're also fiery. You look fragile yet you’re stronger than how you should be, so I have decided to call you Mackenzie Yverest Valencia. Each name bears a specific meaning that describes you.”
And for the first time since I got into the orphanage, I smiled. Genuinely.Mackenzie Yverest Valencia.I will never put shame into that name. Ever.Under the watchful eyes of The Arcane and Shaniah, I honed my skills, training rigorous and unforgiving. At the age of 13, I was entrusted with my first mission. Excitement and trepidation coursed through me as I learned of the perilous task ahead.“The artifact is hidden in a university library, Yves. Only you can enter the place without being suspected. Be warned though, that school’s under the protection of another organization. Best believe killers are scattered in every corner of that school guised as students or staff to guard the artifact. Be careful if you don’t want your first mission to be your last.”A shiver ran down my spine. I know how to wield weapons with deadly precision, but venturing into an unfamiliar territory, alone and unarmed, against a legion of trained killers was akin to walking into a lion's den.As we drove to the university, I lost myself in planning, devising strategies and contingencies in case things went awry, when Shaniah's voice jolted me from my reverie.“Nervous?” she asked, “don’t worry. You’re great and great killers don’t need weapons. They can turn anything into a weapon,” and handed a peculiar pen. This girl must’ve forgotten the fact that I was just 13.“What’s this?” I asked as I took it. It was a pen with a sharp-edge.
“A pen obviously. A fountain pen to be exact. Take care of that, that’s X450… A rare model.”
“I won't be there to be a student or to jot anything down, Shaniah,” I briefly answered.
“Who said you’re gonna use it to write? Pens can spill more than just ink, you know?” Shaniah.
“What do you mean by that?” but she just shrugged and retorted, “I don't know. Perhaps you figure it out yourself.”
I was about to leave the car and enter the university when Shaniah suddenly called out and said, “don’t die, Mackenzie.” and for the first time ever, it felt like someone was genuinely concerned for me. “I won’t…”The school seemed normal, but as a person who was raised exposed to blood, the scent of bloodshed lingered from several people I’ve encountered inside, especially in the library. I guess the artifact is indeed well-guarded, huh?I was casually looking through the shelves when I heard static noises from my earpiece, followed by a familiar voice, “Mackenzie, if things go south, forget about the artifact and get yourself out immediately,” said Shaniah.I’m sorry, Shaniah, but I won’t leave this place without that artifact. I’d rather die with honor than live in shame. I will not fail this mission.“There you are,” I muttered under my breath upon seeing an old quill right by the circulation section. The crowd was absorbed in their own affairs, leaving the section unguarded. Seizing this golden opportunity, I slipped into action. The mission seemed simple enough, at least until I stumbled upon a strikingly handsome, muscular student as I retrieved the artifact. A scent of impending violence hung heavy in the air, emanating from the student.Am I done for?“Not so slick, huh?” he said, his voice low.A fresh wave of static crackled through my earpiece, followed by Shaniah's voice, a hint of panic evident from her tone. "Mackenzie, get out of there now. They knew we were coming. It's a trap."My gaze remained locked on the male before me, his every movement a potential threat. Shaniah’s voice grew more urgent. "Mackenzie, can you hear me? Are you there?”“You won’t be getting out of here alive,” the male muttered as he grabbed my arm.
“Mackenzie, we’re coming in,” our comrade, Crucifix informed. Gunshots and screams were then heard outside which briefly grabbed the attention of the male in front of me.
“You brought some friends, huh? I’ve got some too.”
We were outnumbered, just three of us: Shaniah, Cross, and me. I was unarmed, and the situation was dire. If I don't act quickly, we would not only fail this mission, but also lose our lives, and that was a fate I refuse to accept with a passion, so I thought and thought.“Great killers don’t need weapons. They can turn anything into a weapon.”
“Pens can spill more than just ink, you know?”
“Pens can spill more than just ink,” I repeated Shaniah’s words that were echoing inside my head until I realized what she meant.
“Stop talking nonsense?” he said and wielded his pocket knife.
“I said... Pens can spill more than just ink,” I repeated as I wielded my pen quicker than the male, “and it’ll be your blood.”
Didn’t your trainer teach you not to be complacent no matter how non-threatening your prey looks? With a fluid grace, the student tumbled to the floor, his body crumpling before he could even register the sting of my pen piercing his jugular. But my thirst for blood was far from quenched. I yearned to taste the crimson nectar of others through my pen.“There’s too many of them,” Shaniah's voice crackled through the earpiece. “I’m out of ammo. The students have also alerted the authorities. We must leave. Now.”“The corridors are packed. The available ones are guarded,” Cross.
“I’ll clear the left wing,” and I did as I said. As the chaos went on, my skills grew, and I have learned to memorize the pattern of the building, using it to my advantage.
The three of us were able to get out alive.“Where's the artifact?” Mr. Moreau demanded. Shaniah stepped forward, ready to explain. “I’m sorry, sir. The location was heavily guarded, and we were outnumbered—” but I cut her off, holding up the ancient quill, which surprised everyone.“Here it is, sir.” I said.A wide grin spread across Mr. Moreau’s face as he took the quill. “I knew I could trust you three. Well done. Excellent work!” he exclaimed, then departed with the artifact. That mission was just the beginning. I embarked on countless others, one after another, never failing. I developed a deep fondness for the pen Shaniah had given me, and my killing body count soared to unimaginable heights.Whispers of Everest rippled through the ranks like wildfire, “Everest is at it” or “Be careful, you’ll be up against Everest,” igniting a curious blend of fear and fascination. The name, a chilling melody to some, a thrilling challenge to others, sent shivers down spines and a spark of defiance into the eyes of the bravest.

Little did they know, behind the enigmatic moniker was a force of nature, a petite powerhouse whose agility could rival the wind. But for damn’s sake, my name is spelled with the Y.“Why do you care for me, Shaniah?” I asked whilst idle.
“You remind me of my little sister. She’s the same age as you. Her name’s Louise,” she answered without even looking. Her eyes remained on the book she’s reading.
“Is she dead?” I asked on impulse, causing her to laugh.
“Dumbass, no. She’s in the US with my parents,” she answered.
So that explains why she doesn’t speak in Tagalog. Her family’s from the US. It’s quite surprising how she understands Tagalog so well though. But if she’s not an orphan? Why is she here?“You’re not an orphan then? So why are you here? Why did you end up being one of us?”“God, you’re so curious like Wish.” I must’ve triggered something, for it rendered her to close the book, offering the entirety of her attention to me.“Mackenzie… Being a child of invalidation, pressure, abuse, or neglect bears the same weight as an orphan, if not more. I mean look at me, I’m suffering from dissociation from time to time because of the life you take as normal,” and opened her book once again before continuing, “my life seems far from normal to me”Her words urged my head to formulate more questions to ask.“What’s it like?” I snatched her attention again, “being able to live a normal life, I mean, like being able to have a childhood as a child should have... Like having parents?” Silence embraced us for quite some time.“I don’t know about others but I felt like I was an orphan anyway. Financially stable version,” she laughed to make the atmosphere lighter.“Do you wanna experience a normal life?” She added. Her question got me stunned.Do I?“If so, stay alive, and I’ll have you experience a normal life. That's a promise, Maki.”And Shaniah kept that promise. I was freshly 19 when Mrs. Moreau was murdered. Her death was followed by Mr. Moreau’s.“What the fuck is going on?” I asked when I saw Shaniah and the others packed their belongings with urgency. Shaniah being laced with panic is quite rare to unleash, so I assumed the situation was really serious.“It’s not an artifact or any weapon they’re after. It’s the Moreau’s blood coursing through their veins,” Shaniah.
“What do you mean? Why would anyone want someone else’s blood.” I asked, confused. It just didn’t make sense.
“I don’t know, Mackenzie, but we’re leaving. Nicolette has left for the US, she’ll move to France, then Italy soon. Pack your things, this place will be raided by them sooner or later. Without the Moreaus, we’re done for.”
She’s right. Without the Moreaus, we’re done for. I am done for. I have nowhere else to go and aside from assassination, I am good at nothing.“I’ll stay…” I informed, “I have nowhere else to go. I cannot go back to that sick orphanage, I’ll die here if I must.”The thought of seeing the stadium, the training room, or the corn field again makes me feel sick. I suffered a lot in that place.“You don’t have to worry about that anymore. I know a place. I’ll send you to school, I’ll make you experience the normal life you’ve always wanted, so pack your stuff!” said Shaniah.Three years under the canopy of the Sinclairs had painted a new hue upon my soul, erasing the shadows of my past. From the depths of darkness, a brighter self had emerged, a phoenix rising from the ashes of my former self, though habits weren’t forgotten—never forgotten. I am now in my senior year in college, pursuing Legal Management as a crucial path to the realm of law.“I like your pen,” a known player at school came up to me, “by the way, you’re close with that Doctor Charlie from Yulje, right? Do you mind introducing me to her?” A wide grin was plastered on his face.Men.I flashed a smile—the sweetest grin one could offer—right before uttering the words that altered his brain chemistry.“I don’t, but my pen absolutely does.”
